It's become a long-standing tradition to kick off the start of the holiday season.
The Stevensville Kinsmen and Kinettes invite the community to the service club's annual tree-lighting ceremony at Memory Park, located on Stevensville Road beside Scuttlebutt Tap and Eatery, on Dec. 1, starting at 6 p.m.
Although the tree lighting has been held every year for more than a decade, Kinette member Linda Ruffley said there are many people in the community who still don't know about it.

“We've had a lot of new people move into Stevensville, and that's why I'd like to get (the word about the event) out there so more people know about it,” she explained.
The tree was donated years ago by the Tykolises in memory of a beloved family member.
The festivities will include the tree lighting, caroling and free hot chocolate and doughnuts provided by Tim Hortons.
Ruffley said the holiday event is always fun for those that attend.

“It's also a good way to get to know everybody. After (the tree lighting), there is caroling, and everybody stands around and often introduces themselves.”
The Kinsmen and Kinettes also look for one lucky spectator to turn on the lights of the tree.
“I always try to watch the crowd and see whose kind of in awe of it all,” Ruffley said. “Last year, it was a little boy that was just in awe of the tree, and we got him to flip the switch for us.”
In addition to the tree lighting, the service club is also organizing a luncheon for older adults free of charge at Stevensville Memorial Hall, at 2508 Stevensville Rd. on Sunday, Dec. 3 beginning at 1 p.m. There will be soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee, as well as dessert. Ruffley said everyone will also receive a fruit basket to take home.
While all are welcome to attend the luncheon, Ruffley is asking people to call ahead and let the service club know they'll be attending the lunch.
